Today's irrigation techniques

Irrigated agriculture is the irrigation work that consists of supplying water to different crops through various irrigation methods. Irrigation leaves a mark in many aspects for society and the environment; therefore, it is important that it is efficient and technified since it is one of the main players in the change of the agri-food paradigm. Below, we highlight the main irrigation techniques in agriculture:

Sprinkler irrigation

This is one of the most widely used method, which consists of soaking the crop as if raindrops were falling. This technique is highly recommended, since it saves water, especially if it is done during the night hours. It is also recommended for large, flat and draught-free fields.

Drip irrigation

This technique is characterized by being a localized irrigation system, micro irrigation or micro watering and allows covering the water needs that every plant requires for its development. In addition, it filters the water directly into the soil. This method can be implemented on both flat and sloping land. One of the advantages of this type of irrigation is that it allows considerable water savings.

Flood irrigation

To implement this system, the land must be completely horizontal to ensure an entirely equal distribution of water. This is the most recommended method for crops such as rice.

Girdles irrigation

For the water to reach all parts of the field and to be irrigated uniformly, the soil should have a slight slope. Strip irrigation is a method in which a division is made into narrow rectangular strips separated from each other. In this case, the plant is covered by water at the time of irrigation.

Fertigation

This procedure is one of the most innovative in agriculture. With fertigation it is possible to distribute the minerals and water needed for the crops at the same time. The big difference between other irrigation systems is the application of fertilizers dissolved in the irrigation water to the crops.

Before choosing the irrigation technique, there are several factors to consider, such as the topography of the land, the type of crop, the availability of water and the cost of installation, among others. It is important to take these aspects into account to make the best use of water and the irrigation technique.

Advantatges of irrigation

There are a multitude of advantages to using irrigation, among them are:
  • Easy to install and operate;
  • Weed control;
  • Increased food production;
  • Continuous irrigation;
  • Lower energy consumption;
  • Water efficiency;
  • Water savings.

In conclusion, irrigated agriculture is based on the contribution to the final production and trade of agricultural products and to agri-food development. In short, it is vital for the optimal development of crops.
